Over the years, more and more restaurants have started providing a separate, gluten free menu for customers who require or want it. Outback Steakhouse was the first restaurant near us that we discovered had such a menu. And it is a fairly robust menu at that. We first tried their gluten free menu about three or four years ago. I can happily report that in that time we have not had a single bad experience eating gluten free at Outback Steakhouse.
Outback Steakhouse is one of my family’s favorite places to eat. Not only do we enjoy the food, but the friendly service has always been top notch at the location we visit about thirty-five minutes from home. This restaurant is definitely on the pricey side for us, so we generally save eating there for special occasions, such as celebrating the anniversary of my wife and I kicking the smoking habit (about four and a half years now. Go us!). I would say that, on average, Outback Steakhouse gets our business between four to six times a year. And one of our favorite aspects of the restaurant is their gluten free menu.
To date, this is the best gluten free menu that I have personally seen from a restaurant that does not specialize in gluten free food. When being seated, we always ask for a gluten free menu for my son and it is always promptly delivered to the table. The great thing about this menu, aside from the fact that there are a great many choices available, is that it offers specific ordering instructions for each dish to ensure that you receive food that you will not regret later. Instructions for leaving off certain seasonings, asking for no croûtons, avoiding unsafe sauces, and even asking for salads to be prepared separately are clearly visible on the menu. It makes the ordering experience much easier for those intolerant of gluten, and makes the customer feel more confident about the product they will receive.
The perfect compliment to the menu’s ordering instructions are the knowledgeable and helpful wait staff. Every time my son has ordered at Outback Steakhouse, the waiter or waitress has clearly understood the significance of ordering gluten free, and almost always suggests the measures the menu calls for without being prompted. In our experience, there has been zero hassle in ordering gluten free food from the specific location that we enjoy. Compared to the epic struggles our family had with eating out in the early years of my son’s diagnosis with Celiac Disease, ordering a meal at Outback Steakhouse is a real joy and certainly ensures repeat business from us.
You may have noticed that I have yet to discuss the gluten free food that is offered. Well, there is no such thing as gluten free food at Outback Steakhouse. You are eating the exact same product as all the other customers, only specially prepared to ensure it is free of contaminates. So either you like their food or you don’t. Personally, we love it. My son’s favorite meal is the grilled chicken on the barbie, with a baked potato and green beans. And of course, he has to have the “Chocolate Thunder From Down Under” for dessert. That’s right, the delicious treat is a gluten free dish with no special preparation needed; including the brownie.
So, if you are looking for a good place to get a gluten free meal, give Outback Steakhouse a try. Or, if you are familiar with the restaurant already, share your gluten free dining experience, good or bad, in the comments section below. It has yet to dissappoint us.
